Brown Above is an ink on paper work by Elinor Stanley, which picks up a motif seen elsewhere in her paintings: a nude woman is depicted from above, such that the viewer feels almost crammed in.
‘But I find that even though you're above her head, you're really in her head with these paintings,’ she says. ‘It's a way of almost being her thoughts, floating, in this mad way.’
Indeed, Stanley's figures are often adrift in fields of indeterminate depth and periphery, depicted in a weightless yet deliberately forced manner that invites the viewer to reconsider her own ways of looking.
